A California man, with no previous record, was convicted by a jury of kidnapping a seven-year-old girl from her upstairs bedroom and killing her, leaving her body alongside a road going out of town. His defense attorney tells the press, “He’s a good man but for one three-day weekend of terror.”3 If it is true that the last stage of compromise is to empty words of their traditional meanings and fill them with new meanings, we’ve got to be living inside the two-minute warning here.
